THE OCEAN have premiered their new song “The Quiet Observer”, taken off their upcoming split EP “Transcendental” with MONO, via the following outlets last Thursday. Please only click on your country’s respective link…. and spread it like a rash!!!
USA: Metal Sucks
We have recently been in the studio, and now we can finally tell you what this was all about: We’re excited to announce the release of “Transcendental”, a split EP with Mono (Japan), right in time for our European tour together! The worldwide release date is set to October 23, through PELAGIC RECORDS.
The EP is featuring 1 new track by each band. Mono contribute an 11-minutes track entitled “Death In Reverse”. Our new track, 13 minutes in length, is entitled “The Quiet Observer”. It was inspired by Gaspard Noe’s controversial movie “Enter The Void”, the story of a drug dealer getting shot while tripping on DMT, and entering what is referred to as the „intermediate state“ according to the Bardo Thodol, the Tibetan Book Of The Dead. The book describes a state immediately after a person’s death, when the intellect of the dead person must face its own illusions, in the form of peaceful and wrathful deities, in a protracted psychedelic experience. Only if it manages to expose these horrifying guises as products of its own imagination, can it escape the eternal cycle of rebirth. Noe leaves it open as to whether protagonist Oscar’s death and the following metaphysical experience are actually happening – or whether the guy is simply tripping…
We’re gonna play this beast live on the upcoming tour.
as some of you may have guessed already, the clip we posted on Facebook yesterday celebrated, in stark images captured by the man behind our “Collective Oblivion” DVD, the life, existence and general awesomeness of our bass player Chris Breuer. Motocultor Festival 3 weeks ago, was the last show with him on bass for a while. Dude will continue to be a part of the collective, but has decided to go on an indefinite hiatus from full time touring. Give a round of applause for this man who has been repeatedly but very unjustly called the “laziest man on earth”!
Our new bass boy goes by the name MATTIAS HÄGERSTRAND. Now if you do some google research on the name Mattias, you will find that the name Mattias means “GIFT FROM GOD”. And that’s exactly what this guy is! A fortune teller told Damo and Robin last year about the 2nd Coming of Mattias Hägerstrand, whose ascension to Heaven was a big deal back in the days of Jesus (they never met). And now it occurred: He came back, to join this band and prevail among us, for a limited time on this cursed earth… and so logically, His life and fate was always determined to end up in sinful glory, playing in this unfaithful band of ours.
Mattias also plays with Robin in TOW / The Old Wind. And here is another anecdote about Mattias: during His First Coming, He was filling in on bass for another Swedish band, when they were going out on a pretty big tour, and broke His left arm a few days before the start of that tour (yes, even the Sons of Gods have bones that break!)… And so He went on tour and fingered his bass with a broken left arm every night… or so the legend goes. So you get the idea, He is a tough motherfucker!
Soon enough we shall reveal his face, but for the moment, here’s him playing bass for us in the studio! Ladies and Gentlemen, give yet another round of applause for our gift from the Gods, MATTIAS HÄGERSTRAND!
We’re excited to announce that we will be touring Europe with Mono (Japan) and SÓLSTAFIR in October / November. We are aiming to play a completely new set of old songs that we have never played before on this tour, as well as some new material. These are the dates, more to be added soon

In February, THE OCEAN will warm up for their US tour with 10 German dates alongside black metal shooting stars Der Weg Einer Freiheit. These dates will also be the first shows with the new lineup, featuring Paul Seidel on drums and Damian Murdoch on guitar. EARTHSHIP will support on 3 dates.
THE OCEAN will be returning to North America in 2014 for a co-headline run with Prosthetic Recording artist Scale the Summit and special guests The Atlas Moth and Silver Snakes presented by Metal Sucks. The tour kicks off on Wednesday, March 5 in Seattle, WA and wraps up on Sunday, March 30 in Cambridge, MA, including two dates scheduled in Austin, TX for SXSW.
Robin Staps comments: “We’re excited to return to the US with our first headline tour since 2008. A lot has happened in the meantime and the band is in a different place now, both musically as well as lineup-wise. We have played some bigger tours which came with a lot of compromises (short set, no production, rushed changeovers), so we are really happy that we’re finally gonna be able to offer our Stateside fans and supporters a ‘full’ The Ocean set. We will be playing ‘Pelagial’ in its entirety most nights, the way it’s been written and the way it’s been meant to be performed live, as well as some ‘Heliocentric’, ‘Anthropocentric’ and ‘Precambrian’ tunes.”

On May 10, 2013, we will finally be able to present the majority of our PELAGIC RECORDS artists on the same stage, at Berlin’s C-Club! Don’t miss the ultimate Pelagic night, featuring KHOMA, EF, ABRAHAM, KRUGER, EARTHSHIP, LO!, THE OCEAN and special guests CULT OF LUNA!
2013 will be a busy year for THE OCEAN. The band will release a new album on April 26 (GSA), April 29 (Europe) and April 30 (USA) 2013 on Metal Blade Records, the follow-up to the critically acclaimed “Heliocentric” and “Anthropocentric” albums (2010). To support the release, THE OCEAN will embark on a 3 weeks European tour with CULT OF LUNA in April and May (dates further below), including a performance at Roadburn Festival on April 20th.
The new album will be a single album containing 52 minutes of new music. It will be mixed by Jens Bogren (Opeth, Katatonia, …) in January and will come in 2 versions: instrumental and with vocals. Comments The Ocean’s Robin Staps: “The album was originally written to be instrumental, but in the end me and Loic couldn’t help but try out a few things vocalwise and we soon got pretty excited… so there will be vocals on the album; however, we want everyone to have both versions, and we are also planning to perform the album live that way – with and without vocals.”
The special edition of the album will be released along with a film by Craig Murray (Nine Inch Nails).
The 3xDVD “Collective Oblivion” has been postponed for a release later in the year, but shall also see the light of day in 2013.
